SPD makes arrest after citizen finds nude stranger inside residence

On August 16, 2021 at approximately 5:50pm, SPD officers responded to the area of 1600 S. Royal Street after 911 received a phone call regarding a possible residential burglary in progress.

Upon arrival, officers contacted the homeowner of the residence. The homeowner told officers earlier in the day, a male was standing on his front lawn wearing only underwear. He did not recognize this individual and subsequently requested he get off the property. The male was argumentative but eventually left on foot.

Later in the day, the homeowner received a phone call from his daughter stating she just came home and observed a nude male laying underneath the pool table inside the residence. The homeowner immediately returned to his residence where his daughter was waiting safely outside. He entered his residence to discover the same individual he observed standing on his front lawn earlier.

As he confronted the suspect inside the house and demanded he leave the residence, the suspect assaulted him. At this point, he exited the residence and called 911.

Officers on scene developed probable cause for First Degree Burglary. As officers entered the residence, they made verbal announcements advising the suspect of their presence and notified him he was under arrest. The suspect surrendered without incident and was taken into custody.

The suspect was identified as John Iles (66 y/o). Iles was charged with First Degree Burglary.
