Suspect, wanted for multiple violent crimes, arrested after standoff
On 5-22-23, SPD responded to an assault incident in the 4000 block of W Rowan Ave. A male suspect was reported to have violently assaulted a female in the parking lot, and when an uninvolved citizen attempted to intervene, the suspect pointed a handgun at his head.
SPD contacted multiple individuals and learned the suspect, identified as 41-year-old Jeremy Pawley, had assaulted a female by striking her multiple times and throwing her to the ground. Pawley also reportedly threatened to kill the female, and kicked the victim’s dog as he was assaulting her.
Hearing and seeing the incident, a male emerged from a nearby apartment building and confronted Pawley. Pawley produced a handgun and pointed it at the male before Pawley fled the scene.
In the early morning hours of 5-24-23, Pawley was again able to locate the female victim, whom he had a previous relationship with. The victim attempted to get away from Pawley in her vehicle, but Pawley gave chase in his and intentionally crashed his car into the victim’s vehicle as they drove on Hamilton St approaching Spokane Falls Blvd. Pawley again fled prior to law enforcement arrival.
Investigative units continued their attempts to locate Pawley. A little before 11AM, officers developed information that Pawley was at a residence in the 1000 block of E Illinois Ave. Due to the violent nature of Pawley’s repeated acts, and the information he was armed with a handgun, specialty resources were utilized including SPD’s SWAT team along with members of the Violent Crimes Task Force and Special Investigations Unit. A search warrant was obtained for the residence.
With the residence surrounded, Pawley was uncooperative. He made threats to shoot police officers, and indicated he was strategically positioning himself in the residence in order to effect an ambush.
SWAT introduced chemical agents into the residence, after which Pawley exited the house and was taken into custody.
Pawley has a criminal history which includes 14 felony convictions for offenses including riot with a deadly weapon, unlawful imprisonment, assault, and violation of a restraining order.
After several days being treated for medical ailments unrelated to this incident, Pawley was booked into jail on 06-02-23 for a multitude of charges including assault 2nd degree, assault 4th degree, felony harassment, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Additional charges are possible.
