At about 10:15 this morning, 7/26/23, SPD responded to a report of a stolen vehicle parked in front of the Spokane County Courthouse. The car was left running with the owners disabled relative inside. The relative was standing next to the car to stretch when the suspect drove off in the vehicle. SPD located the vehicle in the 1300 block of N. Pittsburg – it was stopped. Officers with SPD’s SPEAR (Stolen Property Enforcement and Recovery) unit, exited their vehicles and approached the suspect in the stolen car, when he accelerated and drove directly at an officer. The officer jumped out of the way just before the suspect rammed his car into the officer’s car, narrowly missing the officer and pushing the car some 30 feet. The suspect then fled the area.
A short time later officers again located the stolen vehicle at an apartment building in the 500 block of West Sinto. SWAT resources were called in due to the violent behavior of the suspect in attempting to hit an officer with the stolen vehicle. The suspect holed himself up in an apartment for more than an hour before complying with orders to surrender.
Steven M. Davis, 21, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on an outstanding warrant for unauthorized use of a vehicle. Additionally, he faces the following charges for today’s actions; 1st Degree Assault, Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Eluding, and 2 counts of Malicous Mischief. Davis has a prior felony conviction for 3rd degree assault.
