SPD’s SPEAR unit working to combat package thefts

For many, the holiday season ushers in joy and happiness. But being the victim of a package theft can put a damper on those festive feelings, not only due to the monetary loss of the items stolen, but also the damage to a person’s sense of security. SPD’s Stolen Property Enforcement and Recovery unit, SPEAR, is working to curtail package theft by implementing a variety of proactive and investigative strategies.

SPEAR investigators are actively working on numerous cases, and suspects have been identified with arrests made. Additionally, the SPEAR unit frequently reviews footage from security cameras and works to identity suspects depicted, but we need the public’s help! Please monitor SPD’s Facebook page where we have a dedicated photo album labeled “Package Theft Investigations.” If you recognize an individual within the album, email thefttips@spokanepolice.org. Include the identity of the person you believe to be depicted, along with the corresponding report number associated with the photo. We have been able to utilize information provided by the public to solve a multitude of cases; your help is invaluable!

The SPEAR unit is also implementing a ‘bait’ package program. Working with home and business owners, packages will be monitored through a variety of means in order to apprehend those stealing them.

If you have been the victim of a package theft, please report it to Crime Check either by phone at 509-456-2233, or via their website at spokane911.com. SPD frequently learns of package thefts that have not been reported,  which makes any subsequent investigation much more difficult.

Working together we can curb this grinch-like trend!
