One suspect arrested in double homicide investigation

On 12-16-23, SPD’s Major Crimes Unit (MCU) detectives, with assistance from SPD patrol officers, Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) members, and Special Investigations Unit (SIU) detectives, arrested 25-year-old Brandon L. Kenny for two counts of 1st Degree Murder.

On 12-8-23, a little after 11PM, SPD responded to the report of gun shots heard near E Cleveland Ave and N Cuba St in Northeast Spokane. Patrol officers arrived and located two victims, both of which were later pronounced deceased at the scene. The Spokane County Medical Examiner has since identified the two victims as 37-year-old Colton Russell, and 23-year-old Kiara Morgan-Weiland.

MCU detectives immediately began investigating, and over the course of the following week they pursued multiple leads, interviewed numerous people, and executed search warrants.

The investigation is on-going and detectives are working to determine the involvement of other persons. While facts are still being gathered, the information available to investigators at this time indicates the victims were known to the suspect, and this was not a random act.

Kenny was booked into Spokane County Jail for two counts of 1st Degree Murder. Additional charges are possible. Kenny has six felony convictions for crimes including criminal mischief with a deadly weapon, burglary, and theft.
