SPD Participates in a Statewide Motorcycle Safety Emphasis

Over the weekend, members of the Spokane Police Department Traffic Unit took part in a statewide traffic safety emphasis which was planned and coordinated by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, WTSC. Over a 3-day period, the Traffic Unit issued a total of 77 infractions. Of the all the citations issued, speeding was the primary reason for police contacts which resulted in 52 citations. Other infractions issued included no insurance, use of electronic devices and driving with a suspended license. Multiple arrests were also made for outstanding arrest warrants.

During the emphasis, 7 motorcycles were stopped for traffic violations with one contact resulting in an impound of the motorcycle. The primary focus of the emphasis was to reduce vehicle collisions through awareness, education and enforcement.

This weekend, the Spokane Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies across Washington in a statewide traffic safety emphasis coordinated by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC).

With more motorcycles on the road during the summer months, officers will conduct extra traffic enforcement focused on improving safety for both motorcyclists as well as other drivers on the road.

Over the past five years (2021-2025) motorcyclists accounted for sixteen percent of traffic fatalities, making motorcyclists some of the most vulnerable road users in Washington. It’s important for all drivers to stay alert, check blind spots, and share the road safely.

The goal of the emphasis is to reduce crashes through education, awareness, and enforcement, helping make Spokane’s roads safer for everyone this summer.
