At approximately 3:00 p.m., fire crews from the Spokane Fire Department responded to the 700 block of S. Maple St. following reports of heavy black smoke and fire coming from an apartment building.
A Washington State Patrol Trooper noticed the fire while driving by and was able to alert sleeping residents helping them to safely evacuate.
Upon arrival, fire crews found heavy smoke coming from the roof, attic and significant fire on the second floor. Firefighters conducted an aggressive search to ensure there were not additional occupants. Under difficult conditions, crews were still able to contain the fire to the attic and second floor.
The American Red Cross responded to assist several residents displaced as a result of the fire.
There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters.
The fire caused damage throughout the structure. The Spokane Fire Department's Special Investigation Unit are working to determine the cause.
