The Spokane Fire Department (SFD) has been awarded $1,503,000 in grant funding from the USDA/Department of Agriculture, Community Wildfire Defense Grant Fund. Spokane Fire Department is one of thirteen awards granted in the State.

The funds will be utilized for fuels reduction treatments on high priority city owned properties scattered throughout the city in 5-to-500-acre parcels. An additional priority for the funds will be for fuel reduction on any adjacent private ownership and or municipal owned properties. The result will be approximately 1000 acres being thinned, pruned and disposed of over the next five years.

The Community Wildfire Defense Program assists at-risk communities, including Tribal communities, with planning for and lowering wildfire risks on tribal, state, and privately-managed land. The program comes at a time when the nation faces an ongoing wildfire crisis, and these grants support the Forest Service’s plan to confront the wildfire crisis across all lands.
