During Wednesday's legislative session, the Spokane City Council voted to approve additional funding for the 1590 Heart Funds to support operations of anticipated inclement weather sheltering.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that community members can access shelter, especially during extreme weather,” said Council Member Sarah Dixit. “As we approach winter, it is vital that we use these dollars to increase capacity to help our neighbors when they need it most.”

The Salvation Army, Jewels Helping Hands, and Catholic Charities currently serve as housing providers. With winter weather approaching, additional funding has been granted to ensure sufficient resources to maintain inclement weather operations through the end of the year. Inclement weather beds are activated under SMC 02.04.045, which requires activation when the wind chill is predicted to be 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, as reported by the National Weather Service, or when the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaches 201 or higher.

“Fundamental care for the people of Spokane during brutal and extreme weather is a priority,” said Council President Betsy Wilkerson. “Ensuring we have adequate resources and processes in anticipation of future hazardous weather conditions is necessary each year as we face winter. Thank you to our housing providers for their operations and for facilitating care during the brutal months ahead.”
