Parks Unveils City's First Youth Adaptive Field June 15, 2017

Unveiling the City's first adaptive youth development park at Mission Park, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held by the City of Spokane Parks & Recreation and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation.

City of Spokane Parks and Recreation and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and the will host a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially unveil an adaptive Youth Development Park on Thursday, June 15 at 6pm. Mission Park is the City’s first multipurpose playing field designed to provide children with intellectual and physical disabilities with a safe place to play team sports.

Following the ribbon cutting, youth from the Bambino Buddy-Ball Division will participate in a baseball clinic led by Ripken Foundation and Parks staff and conclude the celebration with a pickup baseball game. Additionally, the Ripken Foundation will gift the City of Spokane Parks & Recreation Department with an equipment package, including bats, helmets, gloves, ball bags, wheeled bags and softcore baseballs.

The 12,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility includes a barrier-free, synthetic surface that allows children with assistive devices to move freely throughout the field, as well as 30’ x 10’ dugouts capable of accommodating wheelchairs and walkers. The field also comes equipped with a backstop, bleachers and digital scoreboard. The park will be gifted to and maintained by the City of Spokane, with whom the Ripken Foundation will work closely to create and implement diversified clinics and character education programming.

In just six years, the Ripken Foundation has created 65 completed parks across the country in 20 states, impacting over 279,000 kids annually. Mission Park marks the Ripken Foundation’s third park in Washington (Blaine, Everett) and its 13th adaptive field nationwide. In 2016, the Ripken Foundation impacted over 1.2 million kids nationwide through its Youth Development Park and mentor programs.
