SPD sees increase in scam/fraud incidents involving debit/credit cards

Over the past weeks, Spokane Police have received several reports of scams involving power companies. Victims have reported receiving a call about an overdue payment from the caller stating they are an employee of the power company, demanding immediate payment. Victims have sent money orders in as payments before realizing the calls was fraudulent.

A second type of fraud incident reported involves credit/debit cards where people receive a call asking victims to enter their card number to continue or reactivate their account.

The Spokane Police Department would like the public to be aware of these two types of reported scams. If you receive a call from someone from your utility or credit card company, please call them back at a number on a bill or invoice to verify it is, indeed, the company, before making payment information. If you have been a victim of this type of incident, please call Crime Check at 509.456.2233 to report the incident.
