Spokane Police Investigating Property Facility Break-in

Spokane Police Detectives are investigating a break-in at the Spokane Property Evidence Facility parking lot, occurring overnight. An observant on-duty Spokane Police officer discovered a break in the exterior fence and immediately secured the area.

On the morning of April 2, 2016, an on-duty Spokane Police officer went to the Spokane Property Evidence Facility and saw that the fence surrounding the outdoor parking area had been damaged. The officer immediately secured the area and ensured the suspect was no longer there. Surveillance video showed last night the suspect arriving on a bicycle before prowling through several of the vehicles in the lot.

The outdoor parking area of the facility is used to store vehicles involved in a variety of investigations. Detectives are conducting a comprehensive review of the incident; at this time the impact on investigations is unknown.  Sixteen vehicles prowled by the suspect in the outside parking lot were affected, but the suspect never entered the Property Evidence Facility building.

The Spokane Police Department takes the role of securing evidence very seriously. This is a highly unusual incident and the Spokane Police Department has already taken steps to ensure this does not occur again. The Spokane Property Evidence Facility moved to this location in 2011, and has been continually accredited with the City of Spokane, City of Spokane Valley, and the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office through the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC).  The most recent accreditation was through City of Spokane Valley in July of 2015. WASPC noted at the time that our facility was a model for the rest of the state.
