An on-duty Spokane Police Officer and a passenger in another vehicle were injured in a crash early Sunday morning at the intersection of Ruby and Mission. Collision Investigators from the Major Crimes Unit were called out to assist in the investigation due to the possible serious nature of the injuries sustained by the passenger in the civilian car. Impairment on the part of the civilian driver is being investigated at this time.
On Sunday, just before 4:00am, an on-duty Spokane Police patrol officer was on the way to a possible shots fired call, northbound on Ruby when he was struck by a vehicle that was eastbound on Mission. At that time in the morning, the lights at the intersection were in the flashing cycle with traffic on Ruby facing a flashing yellow and traffic on Mission facing a flashing red. At this time it’s believed the eastbound vehicle failed to stop for the flashing red prior to entering the intersection.
The passenger in the eastbound vehicle was unrestrained and was ejected from the vehicle sustaining serious, but non-life threatening injuries. She was admitted to an area hospital. The officer sustained minor injuries and was treated and released that morning. The driver of the civilian vehicle was uninjured.
A Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) was called to the scene to assess the driver’s possible level of impairment. Collision Investigators form the Major Crimes Unit (MCU) were called out to process the scene, closing the entire intersection down for approximately 3 hours. As this investigation continues, officers will be looking into impairment, speed and any other factors that played a role in the collision. No charges have been filed at this time.
