On Saturday, the Spokane Fire Department responded to the 1800 block of E. Bridgeport St. around 2 p.m. upon the report of a structure fire.

En route to the fire, responding crews reported a visible column of dark smoke and upgraded the response to include additional resources. Upon arrival, fire crews advised of fire involvement in the rear of the home and smoke throughout the single-story residence. Firefighters worked to quickly to extinguish the fire and keep it from spreading further. The structure was rapidly searched for occupants as crews made an attack on the seat of the fire. It was determined that the resident had evacuated prior to arrival of fire crews.

There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters.

The fire caused substantial damage to the rear of the home and smoke damage throughout. The Spokane Fire Department's Special Investigation Unit is working to determine the cause.

Fire crews remained on the scene throughout the evening while the investigation is in progress. The Spokane Police and Fire Department are in contact with the owner.
