Fatal train vs pedestrian collision in Southwest Spokane

On 12-25-18 at about 7:30PM, a Union Pacific Train crew notified SPD and SFD that they may have struck a person on the railroad tracks which parallel Sunset Hwy, near W 3rd Ave. SPD and SFD crews did locate an adult male subject, and that person was subsequently transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite live saving attempts by first responders and hospital personnel, the person did succumb to their injuries.

Spokane Major Crimes Unit Detectives are on scene, along with officials from BNSF and Union Pacific. The train involved was operated by Union Pacific, and the tracks are owned by BNSF. It does not appear the person who was struck is a railroad employee or someone who was authorized to be on the tracks. The condition of the train, including speed, will be determined by investigators. The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s office will release identity at a later time.

Investigators will be on scene for several hours. There is no traffic impact due to this incident.
