On 5/26/2023 in the early morning hours, Spokane Police responded to a person who reported being stabbed as he slept near a bus shelter on Stevens Street. The victim sustained life threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
On 6/08/2023 also in the early morning hours, officers again responded to a call with a person stating he was sleeping on the street under the Jefferson Street viaduct when he was stabbed. Officers provided lifesaving medical treatment to the victim prior to his transfer to a local hospital.
SPD Major Crimes detectives investigating the stabbings were able to develop probable cause to arrest Charles Nutter (30) of Spokane and obtained a warrant for two counts of 1st Degree Assault. Investigators determined Nutter was in California and on 6/29/2023 alerted the Willits Police Department of the felony warrants and that his last known location was in the Mendocino County and Willits area that morning. The next day, SPD detectives advised Nutter was now in Fort Bragg, CA and Fort Bragg police officers arrested him on SPD's warrants.
On 6/29/2023 Willits Police responded to a report of a transient attacked while he slept. Their investigation revealed the suspect was wearing clothing with a distinctive logo that matched the clothing SPD put out in the alert to Willits Police. The investigation into that attack is ongoing.
Nutter remains in the Mendocina County Jail awaiting extradition to Spokane.
