SPD responds to a suspicious substance at the County Elections Office

On 11/08/23 around 10:00am Spokane Police responded to a call of a white powdery substance in an envelope at the Spokane County Elections Office. SPD’s Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) and the Spokane Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team responded and retrieved the substance. It was tested for harmful substances including chemical/biological agents, explosive compounds, and controlled substances. Initial tests of the powder were negative for agents and explosives, and positive for fentanyl. SPD is working with state and federal partners on this ongoing investigation. Similar incidents have occurred at other election offices across the state today.
