SPD arrests suspect for felony theft after cell phone stolen from a blind victim

On 2-21-24 at 12:16pm, SPD responded to the 0 block of West 3rd avenue on a theft incident.  The victim was a blind female and information was relayed to officers that a cell phone was taken from her and the suspect ran to the north.  The phone was a specialized braille cell phone.  A witness was contacted who provided a description of the suspect.  The suspect had been panhandling and made contact with the victim and others at the location, asking for money.  When the victim declined, the suspect grabbed her phone and ran.  With that, officers began checking the area.  Additional information was provided to SPD that helped officers track the phone location to the area of Sprague and Wall.

Officers quickly contacted a male who matched the description.  The suspect was detained and the victim’s cell phone was recovered.  Malcolm J. Davis (29) was arrested for 1st degree theft and for a felony warrant from the Department Of Corrections stemming from a previous burglary arrest.  Davis was booked into the Spokane County Jail and remains incarcerated at this time.
