SPOKANE – Riverfront guests are invited to try out a colorful new interactive carrousel ring toss, designed and donated by local software development and technology consulting firm IntelliTect.

The new ring toss feature rewards carrousel riders with the most accurate throwing skills via a motion sensor that activates colorful lights and a bell when a ring hits the motion sensor in the center of the target.

The new ring toss debuts Friday, Jan. 27, 2023 with 50% off single admission and day passes for all guests from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The IntelliTect team will be onsite from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Background

On a visit to Riverfront’s historic Looff Carrousel, software developer Austen Frostad, an IntelliTect Software Engineer, noticed that the carrousel’s ring toss lacked feedback for champion riders who successfully landed their ring on the target. This gave Frostad the idea to assemble a team of software engineers to reimagine the ring toss.

After speaking with Riverfront Park and receiving approval to begin work on a success feedback solution, Austen stepped in as the project lead designer, crafted a team of expert developers, and quickly created a prototype.

IntelliTect’s Looff Carrousel project team includes an Arduino programmer, 3D designer, print specialist, and UX designer, which allowed them to take Austen’s design to implementation in less than three months. The team worked on the project in their spare time and all items for the project were donated by IntelliTect and employees.

“As a kid, I remember enjoying throwing rings at the old clown backdrop in the carrousel,” Frostad said. “When visiting this summer with my little cousins, I realized they were missing out on the lights and sounds that made my experience special. The Looff Carrousel is a wonderful feature of Spokane, and I wanted to contribute to its legacy of creating special memories like the ones from my childhood.”

The community is encouraged to join the IntelliTect team this Friday to celebrate one of the nation’s most well-preserved hand-carved wooden carrousels and enjoy the new enhancements to this landmark Spokane attraction.
