City, SPD deliver 6 month update to Use of Force Commission

Mayor David Condon and Chief Frank Straub will update the Use of Force Commission on the implementation of the Commission’s 26 recommendations on Wednesday, August 21 at 9:00 am at City Hall.

In February 2013, Mayor Condon and Chief Straub accepted all 26 of the Commission’s recommendations and provided an initial briefing as to the steps that the Spokane Police Department would take to ensure their implementation. On Wednesday, the Mayor and Chief will provide a six-month progress report.

Background:

  • In January 2012, the Use of Force Commission was formed.
  • In January 2013 the Spokane Police Department entered into a collaborative technical assistance and review by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS).
  • In February 2013, the Commission issued its final report and identified 26 recommendations to be implemented by the City and the Spokane Police Department.
