SPD Responds to and Makes Arrests in Three Major Unrelated Incidents Overnight

Spokane Police Patrol Officers responded to several major incidents overnight and into the morning.

None of the incidents below are related, however officers were able to take the suspects into custody quickly and without further incident.

Incident #1: Officers responded to an occupied residential burglary call and take 28-year-old Daniel J. Pajas into custody with the help of a Spokane County K-9 Deputy. He was booked into Spokane County Jail for one count of Residential Burglary and two counts of Burglary in the 1st Degree.

On 08/09/2014, just before 6 p.m., officers responded to the report of a residential burglary where the suspect was possibly still inside the residence, located in the 1600 block of W. 9th Ave. The victim reported the suspect had a machete in his hand and walked into her apartment through a door that was ajar. She was able to push him back out and lock the door.

Officers were checking the area for the suspect when, just a few minutes later, another victim stated that a similarly described man had entered her house in the same block and she believed he was still inside. He assaulted that victim, but she was able to get away, sustaining minor injuries.

A Spokane County K-9 Unit also responded to the scene and officers found 28-year-old Daniel Pajas hiding in a cabinet in the residence. It was also determined that earlier in the day, Pajas had made entry into another residence in the area.

Pajas was taken into custody without further incident and booked for the three burglaries. No other injuries were reported.

Incident #2: Officers responded to a welfare check in the 2400 block of W. Mission. The complainant called police because he was concerned about the welfare of a woman and her 1-year-old child who approached him looking for water. The complaint then observed the woman throw the child over a fence and down an embankment. The child sustained non-life threatening injuries and the woman was arrested for 1st Degree Assault of a child.

On 08/09/2014, just after 2:30 p.m., SPD officers responded to a welfare check in the 2400 block of W. Mission. The complainant had been working in a house at the location when a female and her 1-year-old son entered the house. The female, later identified as 25-year-old Destiny L. Ahenakew, asked the worker for some water. He gave them some water and then called police, concerned that they had nowhere to go.

Right after the worker called, he witnessed Ahenakew throw the child up in the air and over a fence. There was a steep embankment on the other side of the fence and he was very concerned the child was seriously injured. The child had fallen approximately 50 feet down the embankment and hit a tree. Another person at the scene was able to get to the child and bring him up the embankment and to safety.

When officers arrived on scene, they called medics for the child, who sustained non-life threatening injuries. The child was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Ahenakew was arrested and booked into the Spokane County jail for Assault of a Child 1st Degree.

Incident #3: Spokane Police respond to a call that originally came out as a possible carjacking. Officers took 50-year-old Rex L. Pollock into custody for Reckless Endangerment Domestic Violence and Providing False Information to Officers. Pollack is accused of driving his vehicle into the Spokane River while he and a female were inside the car.

On 08/09/2014, just before 6 a.m., Spokane Police Patrol Officers responded to the report of a carjacking in the 500 block of E. Spokane Falls Blvd. Pollock originally told officers that someone had stolen the car and drove it into the Spokane River.

Officers were able to determine that Pollock and a female victim had been arguing in Pollock's vehicle. Pollock started driving recklessly during the argument and left the road where Cincinnati come to a dead end, just south of the Trent Bridge. It appears the vehicle left the road at a high rate of speed and crashed into the Spokane River, stopping in about 5 feet of water, approximately 25 feet from shore.

The female victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Pollock was booked into Spokane County Jail for Reckless Endangerment Domestic Violence and Providing False Information to Officers.
