Update:

Spokane Police Arrest Two shooting suspects for attempted first degree murder related to the July 13th shooting that took place in downtown Spokane.   

A Spokane Police, Major Crimes Unit Detective who has been working the case involving the shooting of two Eastern Washington University football players obtained warrants for the suspects on August 22.  The shooting took place on July 13th of this year in an alley just off Division Street South of Main. This shooting occurred around 1:00 AM in a crowded part of downtown when hundreds of patrons were exiting local bars and restaurants as the evening came to a close. 

Both suspects were taken into custody here in Spokane with the assistance of the SPD Police Anti-Crime teams and Detectives from the Targeted Crimes Unit.   Avery K. Francis (26) and Anthony J. Carell (27) were booked into jail on Thursday evening for attempted first degree murder. 

Avery has felony convictions, unrelated to this event for Robbery 2nd degree, witness tampering and 2nd degree assault along with multiple other arrests.  Anthony has felony convictions, unrelated to this event for 2nd degree assault, unlawful imprisonment and is a registered sex offender.  He also has multiple other arrests. 

All three units, (MCU, TCU and the PAC team) spent hours after the arrest serving search warrants at multiple locations associated with the suspects.  One of the SPD MCU Sergeants expressed great satisfaction with the diligent work of the MCU detective who worked the case.  “From the beginning there was little information to work with, the investigator was painstaking as he collected the necessary evidence to solve the case.”

On 07-13-19 at approximately 0122 hours, SPD patrol units advised there had been a shooting near N Division St and Main Ave, one of downtown’s central bar districts. SPD units assigned to the bar district were close by at the time of the incident and located two victims within a minute. SPD officers along with bystanders began rendering first aid to two adult male victims who both had sustained gunshot wounds.

SFD and AMR paramedics arrived and took over treatment. Both the victims were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

SPD Major Crimes Unit detectives investigated the scene; collecting physical evidence as well as interviewing numerous witnesses. At this time no one has been arrested. The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the motivation for the attack, is still being examined. Suspect information will be released as the investigation progresses.
