Notice from SPD as Team Egypt Arrives & FIFA Events Begin

SPD will be providing security for the events surrounding FIFA and Team Egypt, working closely with partners to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for players, fans, residents, and visitors. Community safety remains our top priority as we prepare for a busy and exciting summer of FIFA-related events.  Through proactive planning, coordination, and presence at key venues and gathering spaces, SPD is committed to helping create an environment where everyone can celebrate, connect, and enjoy the festivities safely.

Surrounding the use of drone technology for security, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), who has jurisdiction over all airspace, has updated its restricted airspace regulations for the Spokane area.

This includes:

  • A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) encompassing Gonzaga and surrounding area. This will be 24/7 from June 1st to July 20th.
  • During this time, SPD will be operating drones within the area with permission from FAA. This is to ensure the safety of our community and Team Egypt.
  • Spokane Police and it’s partners will also be operating drone detection equipment in the area during this timeframe.
  • Any persons operating drones in this airspace during the TFR without authorization may face local/federal civil and/or criminal penalties.
  • To foster and ensure a safe-space for flight operations and operations of the FIFA events, members of our community are asked to avoid flying drones in the area of the Temporary Flight Restrictions during the entirety of the prohibition.
  • Safe drone and crewed flight are a safety priority for our community; everyone can help by doing their part.
