Spokane Municipal Court and the Spokane Police Department have been made aware of a new scam targeting out-of-custody defendants. These scammers are calling defendants and their family members demanding money ahead of first appearance hearings and threatening arrest for non-payment.
In some instances, scammers have falsely advised that the court is no longer providing ankle monitors and instead using bracelets that look like Apple watches. Municipal Court continues to use ankle devices as a pre-trial monitoring tool.
Municipal Court, Pretrial Services, and Community Justice Services will never contact individuals with the demand for money or any services (i.e. bracelet monitoring) to remain out of custody.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted by these scammers is encouraged to report the incident to law enforcement via Crime Check at 509.456.2233
