Reckless driving ends in deadly crash

On 09-21-21 a little after 8:30PM, an SPD patrol officer happened upon a just-occurred, two-vehicle, collision at W Indiana Ave and N Washington St in Spokane’s northcentral neighborhood. The officer recognized one of the people involved in the collision was seriously injured and immediately rendered aid.

SFD and AMR crews arrived on scene and took over treatment of the injured individuals. A female in her 60s was transported to a local hospital; tragically the woman succumbed to her injuries.

SPD officers, including Major Crimes Unit collision specialists, investigated the incident which included speaking with witnesses and obtaining various pieces of evidence.

Witness accounts indicated that a vehicle driven by 21-year-old Tyrell Hemphill was traveling North on N Washington St when it blew threw a red light striking the deceased victim’s vehicle. The witnesses believed that Hemphill was traveling at least twice the speed limit when he entered the intersection.

Hemphill was booked into Spokane County Jail for vehicular homicide.
