After a nearly 2 hour standoff, Spokane Police have arrested Michael Sam (27) for one count of 1st Degree Assault- Domestic Violence after a stabbing in the 1600 block of West 6th Ave. A number of department and partner agency resources were called out in order to bring this incident to a peaceful resolution.

Today, December 14, 2024, just before 10:00am, Spokane Police responded to the report of a stabbing in the 1600 block of West 6th Ave. One adult victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Once it was determined which apartment the suspect was in, multiple resources were called out in order to take the suspect, Michael Sam, into custody. The SWAT team, Explosives Disposal Unit, Hostage Negotiation Team, K9 officers, and Air Support Unit officers all responded to assist. Out of an abundance of caution, several apartments were also evacuated. Additionally, Spokane Fire Department and AMR were on standby.

Sam was advised numerous times he was under arrest but failed to obey officer’s commands to come outside. A chemical agent was introduced into the apartment, causing  Sam to eventually come out and was taken into custody. He will be booked into Spokane County Jail for the 1st degree assault charge.

The Spokane Police Department appreciates the public’s patience while we worked to take Sam into custody. Not only were several apartments evacuated, but I90 was closed for a brief time as well. Your cooperation helped bring this to a safe ending for all involved.
