At 4 PM on Saturday, the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) was dispatched to 9114 North Newport Highway for a reported fire inside the cooking preparation area at Wendy's Restaurant. Nearby Fire Companies from Fire District 9 also responded as the automatic aid plan always selects the closest resources. First arriving crews reported black smoke issuing from a roof vent at the establishment. Firefighters entered the structure with numerous dry chemical fire extinguishers to extinguish an intense and rapidly growing flammable liquid fire. Firefighters successfully contained the fire to a commercial fryer and ductwork area, preventing it from spreading and consuming the building.

We are very thankful for the staff at Wendy's Restaurant for their proficiency in exercising their fire and evacuation plans. The restaurant's team ensured that the employees and patrons evacuated safely from the building before the arrival of emergency response crews. Their performance greatly assisted the prevention of injuries to civilians.

The property and contents saved as a result of the Fire Service's efforts are estimated at well over one million dollars. The damage to culinary equipment and supporting infrastructure as a result of the fire are estimated at $50,000.

The nature and cause of the fire remain under investigation. There were neither injuries to firefighters nor civilians as a result of this incident.
