Spokane Park Board

Authorized by and Date: The Park Board was authorized by Chapter 04.11 of the City's Municipal Code in accordance with Ordinance C33995. Effective on May 6, 2007.

Mission statement: The City of Spokane Parks and Recreation Division acquires, operates, enhances, and protects a diverse system of parks, boulevards, parkways, Urban Forest, golf courses, recreational, cultural, historical and open space areas for the enjoyment and enrichment of all.

The Spokane Park Board Bylaws are established by the Park Board to govern Park Board members on the rules of procedure for carrying out the board's functions and responsibilities.

Purpose: The Spokane Park Board was created in 1910 and granted power by Article V of the City Charter to layout, establish, purchase, procure, accept and have the care, management, control, and improvement of all parks grounds and parkways controlled by the City of Spokane and used for park purposes. The Parks division receives approximately 2.3% of the City’s budget (representing 8% of the general fund’s expenditures, as mandated by City Charter). Program revenues and grants bring in additional money. Combined, the annual Parks & Recreation budget is about $24 million. These funds allow us to steward nearly 4,000 acres of public land and offer hundreds of free and low-cost recreation programs. The City's golf courses are operated as an enterprise fund and are not supported by tax dollars.

Park Board Meeting date, time and location: The Park Board meets at 3:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month in person in the Council Chambers, lower level City Hall and virtually via WebEx.

Study Session Meeting date, time and location: Sessions are held on an as-needed basis and are held at City Hall. Conference room location varies.

The Spokane Park Board Toolkit (PDF 43.9 MB) offers detailed information on the duties, responsibilities and goals of being a Park Board member. Additional tools include contact information, meeting schedules, organizational chart, annual budgets and related articles.
